Kirsten Rassmus-Gröhn

Kirsten Rassmus-Gröhn is a researcher in rehabilitation engineering with a specific focus on non-visual interaction design, i.e. reseach concerning sound and haptics (touch), specifically in digital media. Her research is cross-disciplinary and concerns methods for involving users in design processes, prototyping techniques, universal design as well as new innovations and designs for improving participation in society and well-being for persons with disabilities. She has coordinated a national project on an innovation for making it possible for blind children to make digital drawings (HIPP), and has had the role of work package leader for user requirements in two EU projects (HaptiMap, NavMem).

Current projects:

  • Activables: interactive objects for physical exercise and rehabilitation training after stroke  (NORDFORSK)
  • STARR: Technology for aiding stroke survivors to make aware and manage their risk factors (EU)

Recently completed project:

  • Skolkontakten: a Universally Designed digital platform for communication between teachers and parents  (PTS)
  • NavMem: prototyping and research about a digital aid for navigation targeted to persons who have memory decline (EU)
  • The use of 3D-models and 3D-prints in school for pupils with visual disabilities (SPSM, the national agency for special education and schools)
  • HaptiMap: universally designed multimodal maps and digital wayfinding aids (EU)
  • Tidsmaskinen: a multimodal, universally designed digital tourist guide with novel interaction (Region Skåne)
  • HIPP: a digital audio-haptic drawing tool for children with blindness or low vision (Arvsfonden)
  • NiviNavi: research on and design of a digital app for playful navigation training targeted to children with blindness or low vision (Vinnova)

Teaching: interaction design, universal design, rehabilitation design

  • Advanced Interaction Design MAMN01 (course coordinator)
  • Universal Design - Perspectives, Methods and Evaluation (Moodle course)
  • Rehabilitation engineering (supervisor)

I supervise several master (second cycle) students in interaction design and rehabilitation engineering involving usability, interaction, accessibility and electronic assistive technology.

Other

I am currently also deputy head of the department of Design Sciences.
