Bodil Jönsson

I am professor emerita of rehabilitation engineering at Lund University and have been the advisor of Certec’s doctoral students. As head of research, I contributed significantly to Certec’s theory and methodology, a current description of which can be found in the book, Design Side-By-Side, published by Studentlitteratur in the autumn of 2006.

Research focus: I am drawn to concept design: design that gives shape to thought, and to technology as the realization of thoughts. And to how design and technology, when they come together, steer the thoughts we can think and the lives we can live. Much of my time has been spent on accessibility for people with cognitive limitations.

My teaching activities at Certec are described separately. I am a member of the Pedagogical Academy of the Faculty of Engineering  and have received the Excellent Teaching Practice (ETP) Award. I am also a member of Lund University's Research Ethics Board. Over the years, I have been the faculty examiner at the oral defenses of many PhD candidates and sat on the examining committees of others. I have also been on the boards of foundations and councils.
Until about 1990, I worked primarily as a physicist. Teaching and learning were of great interest then as well, both in and outside the field of physics; my educational portfolio spans a broad spectrum. I have also been involved in environmental protection work for several decades. If you are interested in learning more about me, have a look at my background, curriculum vitae, publications and lectures.

I have had the honor of receiving a number of prizes and awards. This has led me to in-depth reflections on the significance of different kinds of work: What is important to my immediate surroundings and what is of significance to a wider world—now and in the long run? It is an impossible question to answer but well worth taking the time to consider; after all, time is really the only thing a person has.

Over the years, I have taken part in a number of external activities, often before large audiences. It was as a physicist that I became known to many in Sweden on the TV program "Ask the Experts in Lund." It is through my books, though, that I have reached an even greater number of people, particularly "Unwinding the Clock: Ten Thoughts on Our Relationship to Time" from 1999 and more recently, "Ten Years After" published in 2009.

On October 1, 2009 I became professor emerita. I can now be reached at www.bodiljö
