I have been employed at Certec, Department of Design Sciences, Faculty of Engineering (LTH) as a researcher since September 2011. I am currently working on two projects:
- DIKO – a digital contact book for families who have children with developmental disabilities.
- SID – exploration of sensuousness, interaction and participation of children with severe cognitive disabilities using interactive and tangible interfaces.
My research aims primarily at the development of the DIKO platform and the SID tangible interfaces for children with developmental disabilities.
During a research stance at Certec in 2009, I was working on the development of tongue-computer interfacing methods for individuals with tetraplegia.
- TongueWise – Tongue-computer interface for individuals with upper-limb mobility impairments.
Since the beginning of my studies, I have been interested in the fields of electronic, mechanical and computer systems applied to the development of technologies to assist individuals and for the benefit of humanity. That has been reflected in my graduate studies and post-graduate academic positions.
My main research area of interest involves computer interfaces, assistive devices, human-computer interaction, tangible and embedded interaction, user interface design, rehabilitation technologies and intelligent control systems.
I was born in 1983 in Mexico City. I graduated with a B.Sc. in Mechatronics Engineering in 2005 from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios uperiores de Monterrey – Campus Estado de México (ITESM-CEM). I obtained an M.Sc. in Intelligent Autonomous Systems in 2007 at Aalborg University, Denmark. My thesis reported the development of an intelligent control for powered transfemoral prostheses. The focus was on actively controlling the knee joint mechanisms to simulate normal gait patterns and adapt to the user’s gait speed by using pressure sensors, accelerometers and angle sensors located in the prosthesis.
Previous work (postdoc) and Ph.D. studies at the Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction (SMI), Aalborg University, was on the development of tongue-computer interfacing methods for people with motor disabilities. The objective was to develop an embedded computer interface that ensures a sufficient degree of control, focusing on the system’s usability and typing/pointing performance.
