Research: Non-visual interaction

My research is based on new ways of interacting for blind people but has expanded to include non-visual interaction on the whole. This involves how you can use computers, mobile phones and tablets by means of touch and sound feedback to gain access to graphic information and computer models without using vision. This way of interacting can also be beneficial in other situations where people for whatever reason are unable to use their vision to interact with technology.

Current projects:

  • Time Machine: Part of the larger Digital Creation Project of Region Skåne (southern Sweden)
  • HIPP: An audio-haptic tool for use in the schools (Swedish Inheritance Fund)
  • NiviNavi: Mobile location-based games for navigation training (Vinnova)

Recently completed project:

  • HaptiMap: New ways of interacting for users of mobile navigation services (EU ICT)

Teaching: interaction design, cognition ergonomics

In addition to being responsible for Certec's overall educational planning on the undergraduate (first cycle) level, I am involved as a teacher in several courses:

  • Advanced Interaction Design MAMN01 (course coordinator)
  • Cognitive and Physical Ergonomics MAMA11
  • Apps, Pictures and Electronic Assistive Technology in Healthcare, Schools and Social Services TFRD30 (course coordinator)
  • Guest lecturer in courses on haptics and virtual worlds

I supervise several master (second cycle) students in interaction design and rehabilitation engineering involving usability, interaction, accessibility and electronic assistive technology.

I am the vice-chair of Study Programmes Board A for the following Master's programmes: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering Technologies, Medicine and Technology; and for the two Bachelor's programmes, Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering Automation (Helsingborg).

I chair the accessibility committee for the International Conference on Universal Design to be held at Lund University in 2014.
