I base my research on close cooperation with three pedagogical institutions in the Øresund Region working with Snoezelen for children with profound or severe intellectual disability (ca. 30 children in 2 countries).
Methodically, I draw upon inspiration from theories on "critical artefacts", "provotyping", "technology as questions", etc. to elicit tacit knowledge as part of Action Research/Participatory Design processes. A central method is frequent interventions with crude yet operating interactive sketches/probes from the very early stages of the design process.
My PhD is centred around research-through-design on potentials of an embodiment (Mark Johnson, etc.) approach to digitally enhancing the pedagogical praxis in Snoezelen (multisensory rooms for people with disabilities). As part of this endeavour, I’m curious as to the potentials for interactive engagement carried by the proximate senses of touch (tactile), balance (vestibular) and movement/body awareness (proprioception). This in opposition to the prevailing audio-visuals. A barely translatable Danish phrase to catch the essence could be "kropskloge tilblivelsesprocesser" .
My interest for these issues is not only that of an interaction designer emphasising materiality, aesthetics and the role of the body in meaning making; it is also tied to working for the empowerment, participation and joy of people with disabilities.
