Helen Petrie

I am the Lise Meitner Professor at Certec [link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lise_Meitner].  I have a BA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Melbourne in Australia, an MSc in Information Technology from Queen Mary College London, and a PhD in Cognitive and Experimental Psychology from University College London.

For the past two decades I have been researching the design and evaluation of technologies for people with disabilities and older people.  I have been involved in many EU-supported and national research projects, as well as projects for government and industry. I have particularly worked on new technologies for people with visual disabilities.  I am also interested in methods in human-computer interaction and in the design and evaluation of systems for interacting with digital cultural heritage.

I am currently involved in the following projects and networks:

  • I2Web [link: http://i2web.eu/index.html], which is investigating ways of making Web2.0 applications more accessible to people with disabilities and older people
  • eAccess+ Network, [link: http://www.eaccessplus.eu] which is promoting eAccessibility throughout Europe and beyond
  • ChartEx [link: www.chartex.org], which is developing ways for historians to easily find information about places, people and associated events and work with such information; it is using natural language processing (NLP) and data mining to automatically extract relevant information and find new and potentially interesting links between information.  I am particularly working on the “virtual workbench” which will allow historians to interact with the information

I am also Professor of Human-Computer Interaction [link: http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~petrie/] at the University of York, UK
